TuneUp Utilities 2010

Optimisation tool to squeeze more power from your PC

TuneUp Utilities has proven a popular solution for those who are looking to optimise or squeeze more power from a PC, and this is in no small part down to regular improvements in new versions that help to refine or add further benefits to the package.

TuneUp 2010 is no exception, and this time around offers a handful of interesting new upgrades. The most notable of these is the ‘Turbo Mode', which when switched on will disable unnecessary background processes to devote more power to active programs. Among other things this claims to increase frame rates per second (FPS) in games.

The new Live Optimisation feature works in a similar way by automatically tweaking priorities to help speed up the response rate of active applications, even when a system is running at full capacity, and additional information is available via a health indicator for Vista and Windows 7 users along with the new TuneUp Utilities Optimisation Reports, which summarise the changes the software has made over time.

TuneUp Utilities also improves and streamlines some of the existing functionality and this includes the interface, which now offers four distinct categories covering system maintenance, performance, problem solving and customisation. Individual tools can still be accessed from within each, but what the new look basically provides is a status report of these areas at a glance, which can then be optimised by walking through each of the tools that can help, using a wizard-based approach.

This is backed up by a news ticker style display that shows suggestions and warnings to remind you which areas can be fixed or improved. Finally, TuneUp retains its one click maintenance solution to take some of the hassle out of category surfing and help ensure that all key areas of the system are in good working order.

To try out some of the new features, in particular the Turbo Mode, we ran some FPS tests on a couple of modern games, with mixed results. In most cases we saw a negligible improvement of under 5 percent, which isn't really significant enough to make a noticeable difference to gameplay or draw a quantitative conclusion as to the impact of the software.

However, the system we were using was already fairly clean (and optimised, after running the suite) and this percentage did increase when we intentionally loaded it with additional background processes that would all chip away at the free resources available.

Turbo mode also offers more general operational benefits by postponing scheduled maintenance, switching off external device synchronisation and customising the behaviour of the OS, but like many of the benefits of the TuneUp suite, is far more beneficial to those with older, slower computers or ‘untidy' users who are less inclined to manually remove applications and processes they rarely use.

Features:
Since many computer users would have neither the time nor the know how to keep a system in tip top condition, TuneUp is a fast and effective way to automate this process and as such still has a place in this market. The wealth of tools available is impressive and most are well structured enough for anyone to get involved, and the improvements on offer build nicely on the core benefits of the suite.
