Adobe Photoshop 7.0

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and Adobe ImageReady 7.0 Delivers Must Have Release for Professional Photographers, Web and Graphic Designers with Enhanced Retouching, More Organized File Access, and Expanded OS Support.

SAN JOSE, Calif. February 24, 2002 Adobe Systems Incorporated, the leader in network publishing, today announced Adobe® Photoshop® 7.0, a major upgrade to the world's professional image editing standard. Adobe Photoshop 7.0 boasts an extensive set of new features that allow photographers, Web and graphic designers to work more efficiently, explore new creative options and produce the highest quality images for print, Web and other media. Native on Mac® OS X and Microsoft® Windows® XP, Adobe Photoshop 7.0 provides enhanced multi processor support and interoperability with other native Adobe applications.

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 software delivers a comprehensive toolset that helps users meet any creative or production challenge. The new Healing Brush revolutionizes the process of retouching images, effortlessly removing dust, scratches, blemishes and wrinkles, while automatically preserving shading, lighting, texture and other attributes. The new File Browser allows users to quickly locate, organize and visually manage images, as well as view EXIF information from digital cameras, including date captured, exposure settings, and associated metadata (such as creation and modification dates).

The creative tools in Adobe Photoshop 7.0 help design professionals generate compelling visual effects and stay ahead of the competition. A new painting engine lets users create custom brush presets, simulate techniques like pastels and charcoal, and add special effects such as grass and leaves, while the new Pattern Maker plug-in can create patterns such as rocks and sand. An enhanced Liquify plug-in provides even greater control over image warping with zoom, pan and multiple undo capabilities.

"Adobe Photoshop 7.0 does a beautiful job of building on the advances of previous versions to make 7.0 the most powerful, most amazing, and most useful release of Photoshop ever," said Scott Kelby, president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. "The new Healing Brush may be the single coolest tool in Photoshop ever, and when you use it, all you can do is shake your head and say, "How in the world does it do that?" It's that cool."

Including Adobe ImageReady® 7.0, the advanced Web component, Adobe Photoshop 7.0 provides new output enhancements so Web designers can apply extra compression to images while maintaining the quality of text and vector shape layers, as well as exercise greater control over how transparency is maintained online. New support for the WBMP format enables optimization for display on PDAs and other wireless devices. For interactive authoring, Adobe ImageReady software now allows all slices, rollovers, image maps and animations in one palette, and an expanded set of rollover types allows for the creation of more effective navigation bars.

To streamline the management and updating of large image libraries, Adobe Photoshop 7.0 integrates with Adobe AlterCast®, Adobe's dynamic imaging server software. Adobe Photoshop 7.0 supports Adobe's XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform), an open framework that standardizes the creation and processing of content across publishing workflows.

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 is also tightly integrated with Adobe Illustrator®, Adobe InDesign®, Adobe GoLive®, Adobe LiveMotion™, Adobe Premiere®, Adobe After Effects® and Adobe Acrobat®.

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 has always been the application of choice for professional image editing. And with the new features and improvements that have been implemented in version 7, its appeal is now stronger than ever.

To describe Adobe Photoshop as merely an image editing application does not do this package justice, as it can do far more than that. For example it is almost equally at home helping you design and create entire Web pages and print adverts as it is at enhancing, re touching or editing photographs and other digital images.

Indeed, its ability to produce almost complete Web pages, complete with all the java necessary to handle button rollovers and image swapping behaviours, makes Adobe Photoshop a tool not just for those working in more general media design and print houses, but also one that Web designers can use alongside their HTML editors.

It would be impossible to cover even a fraction of Adobe Photoshop's features, which include just about every image editing, enhancing and printing feature you could wish for, in the space available here. In fact we can't even cover all of the new and improved facilities found in version 7 - there are just too many of them. So, instead, we'll concentrate only on the most important of the package's new features.

One of the most annoying limitations of Adobe Photoshop 6 and all its predecessors was its lack of an image browser, a feature available in just about every other image editing application, including those at only a fraction of its cost. Thankfully this has finally been rectified in Adobe Photoshop 7.0, which now boasts a powerful image browser that not only allows you to view thumbnails of the images in any directory on your PC, but also to view information on them, such as their colour profile, size, modification date, and even any attached Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) information generated by the likes of a digital camera.

Adobe Photoshop's painting facilities have also been improved, making it easier to choose the size, shape and dynamics of the brush you want. Some completely new features have also been added to the brush section, which amongst other things allow you to accurately simulate traditional types of painting techniques should you wish to. And you can now even combine two different brush types when painting, which allows you to produce some quite amazing results.

Adobe Photoshop's image editing and enhancing facilities have also improved. You'll now find it even easier to automatically correct colours in a photograph, for example, and thanks to some additions and tweaks in its Liquify facility, you'll find making precision distortions or adding certain types of special effect an absolute doddle. Two completely new photo enhancing tools have also been added to Adobe Photoshop 7 - the healing brush and patch tool - which together make invisibly removing blemishes, scratches, dusk and wrinkles from scanned images a pleasure rather than a chore.

A great deal of progress has also been made in terms of Adobe Photoshop's Web Oriented facilities. By far the most useful of these is the new Rollover palette to be found in ImageReady, a tightly integrated but separate, more Web-oriented application that comes bundled with Adobe Photoshop 7 as standard.

The new Rollover palette makes it far easier to create, edit and manage rollovers and image maps than was the case in previous versions of the package. However, it is still not quite as easy or intuitive as performing the same tasks with arch-rival Macromedia's Fireworks Web Specific image manipulation package.

Improvements have also been made in Adobe ImageReady's Web Specific output options, with a new and very useful dithered transparency option and a selective optimisation facility. This latter feature allows Adobe ImageReady to automatically keep text and vector shapes sharp while compressing the rest of the image when outputting an image as a Web page or as Web page elements; an extremely useful facility.

A few more general improvements to Adobe Photoshop 7 are also worthy of note - albeit briefly - such as the slightly more modern look to its user interface, support for Adobe Acrobat 5's security settings and, last but by no means least, a built-in multilingual spell checker.

Adobe Photoshop 7 Features:
Adobe Photoshop is undoubtedly a must-have application for anyone working with images, be they in print or on the Web, and the new features in version 7 simply underline this fact. The only real drawback to Photoshop is its price, which is a reflection of the fact that this product is aimed squarely at the professional end of the market, not at the home user who occasionally wants to dabble at image editing or Web site design.
