Output Files:
Movavi Video Converter doesn't have nearly as many output file format options as the other programs in this category. Most of the formats it converts into are common, which alienates a lot of people who might have videos with uncommon file formats that need to be converted. Out of all the output options, the only semi-uncommon one looks to be M2T. Otherwise, you're subjected to a list of vague entries (DVD Video, HD Video and Online Video) mixed in with common file formats. There is a better variety in input options than you could ever find in the output category.

Features:
There is a button clearly labeled on the toolbar to add DVD files from your own personal, unencrypted DVDs. And unlike the other products you are not faced with a list of meaningless VOB files, Movavi Video Converter tells you exactly where the main feature is located and converts the whole thing at once.

We were excited and had high hopes for Movavi’s DVD to video converter feature, because it is fairly unique to this program. But when tested, Movavi’s we found it took more than three hours to convert a one hour segment from the DVD in the drive. Additionally, we found the video and audio were both distorted. The audio was particularly humorous, everyone in the video sounded like they had been sucking helium.

We found that files converted to MOV QuickTime, is only designed for iPods. You can adjust the resolution size to make the video bigger, but it will be extremely pixilated.

If you feel comfortable adjusting advanced settings you can change video and audio codices, video and audio bitrates, framerate, sample rate and more. However, for the novice user this could feel intimidating and complicated. We suggest sticking with the default settings.

With Movavi Video Converter you can also capture images of your video like your son sliding into home, or your daughter’s first smile. Images can be saved as BPM, JPEG, GIF or PNG.

Movavi is now compatible with 180 different types of portable devices.

Ease of Use:
We were also disappointed that Movavi converted videos quite slowly. Not only did we have difficulties when we tried converting DVDs, it would usually take longer to convert video on your hard drive than it would take to actually watch the video. However, we'll point out that Movavi converted typical videos like AVI, WMV and MPEG2 to similarly common files just fine, albeit slow. Although, Movavi Video Converter cannot convert FLV files downloaded from the Internet.

Help and Support:
We didn’t find anything particularly spectacular about Movavi’s help and support. They include email support, a user guide and FAQ. Unfortunately, it took Movavi several days to return our email inquiry and we had to download the help files, most of which the index section didn’t work. However, the overall in-program help guide answered most of our questions and the program is so easy to use, it’s likely you’ll never have to use the help.

Summary:
Movavi Video Converter is video converter software that looks like it's a lot better than it is when you glance at its interface. It's capable of doing a lot of things, but its limitations in the areas of input and output file formats and additional tools make it look deficient in comparison to many of the other programs in this category. To top it all off, even though it has a streamlined feature set, it doesn't convert videos very quickly at all. A beefed up feature set and sped up interface would do this program wonders.

Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Ultra

Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Ultra Video Editing Software.

Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Ultra is a powerful video editor, and its interface is stylish and friendly when you work with it in full screen mode. This latest version of the program introduces a number of usability improvements and new features, most compellingly the TrueTheater video correction and enhancement tool. On the other hand, the upgrade fixes none of the previous version's interface faults, such as its tendency to obscure tools when you run the program at less than full screen. Since I like to multitask, these drawbacks have begun to grate on me a bit.

I was pleased with the newly resizable panes for Media (where you add files), Preview (where you watch your movie), and Timeline (where you assemble the movie) in version 8's Edit window. Cyberlink nicely revamped the Produce window (where you select the output format and the location) as well. Formerly presented over a series of three step through dialog boxes, all options now appear on a single page that fills the main window. Version 8 also reworks the 'Create disc' pane so that you can view the content of the disc and the menu structure in tree diagram form.

Regrettably, due to a lack of scrollbars, if you don't run the program at full screen, you won't be able to see some critical components. Also, when you set the Windows task bar to hide automatically, PowerDirector blocks access to it, forcing you to click Ctrl Esc to display it. I gave version 6 and even version 7 a pass on these and other interface problems, expecting Cyberlink to fix them in free updates. The company has assured me that corrective code will finally be available within the next month as a free update.

Welcome new features include TrueTheater HD up sampling, video stabilization, audio and video denoise tools, motion frame interpolation, three music tracks (up from one in version 7), and nine picture in picture tracks (up from six). You also get a new particle FX library for overlaying such elements as snow falling.

Update:
When a company keeps its word, I think you should know about it. Cyberlink sent me the latest version of PowerDirector 8, and all work areas are resized with the main window so that all controls are visible at all times. Nice job, folks. Since this change corrects the main shortcoming I identified in the original version of the PowerDirector 8, I now have no hesitation in recommending the program.

If you want speed, I've got your video editing app. CyberLink PowerDirector 8 is the fastest of the current crop of video editors for the PC. CyberLink's claim to fame, according to the company, is optimized performance for different types of hardware. That certainly holds true here; the latest version includes enhancements for Intel's Core i7 processors. That said, PowerDirector 8's interface remains a bit stubborn and difficult to understand, and the app is missing a few key effects. Still, it's a solid choice for powerful video editing on the cheap.

On average, the app started up within just nine seconds. On each startup, it presents you with a blank project. This was most conducive to getting to work immediately, before losing your inspiration. In comparison, Pinnacle took over 20 seconds, and Premiere Elements took over 40 seconds and even failed to start up properly on occasion. CyberLink splits the main interface into three sections: a preview window on the top right, a content browser on the top left, and a timeline at the bottom. Four basic modes selectable with color coded buttons let you capture footage (from a DV camcorder, TV or DTV signal, or the built-in Web cam), edit footage, produce your final product, and create a disc.

Across the top left, there's a column of icons that correspond to various object types. For example, you can browse recorded media clips in the Media Room. You can also sift through effects, which massage or transform video quality. There are also dedicated rooms for picture in picture video, as well as particles which overlay on top of videos as extra layers, for things like falling slow, bubbles, and graduation hats. Several of these were fun, but most just looked silly. The Title Room adds dialog boxes and other text overlays, while the Transition Room lets you crossfade clips with blurs, flames, broken glass, flips, and other effects. Audio mixing and voiceover rooms cover sound duties, and chapter and subtitle rooms let you break up content for burning onto a disc.

PowerDirector's UI doesn't scale particularly well; you'll need a big monitor with high resolution to avoid hiding toolbar buttons. The app hard-crashed on me once, in the middle of working with a default theme. Other times, despite all the work CyberLink did to enable background processing, the interface froze up and didn't respond to mouse clicks for seconds at a time. Still, this only happened occasionally; for the most part, PowerDirector ran very smoothly.

Performance and Production:
The video preview window looked super sharp, and showed none of the jerkiness of Premiere Elements 8, or the requisite small size of Pinnacle Studio 14. That made adding multiple clips to the timeline and trying out different arrangements simple. In fact, just about everything I tried felt super fast compared to Premiere Elements 8 and Pinnacle Studio 14. When I imported a series of 720p HD video clips, the program asked to create shadow files for the video in order to speed up the editing process. The import itself only took a few seconds; PowerDirector continued to create the shadow files in the background as I got back to work.

TrueTheater HD, a new feature, upscales standard definition content for improved HD output; it won't cover for poor-quality footage, but helps in blending in clips from different sources without jarring viewers. In fact, CyberLink matches Premiere Elements in terms of layered effects and edits, Chroma key controls, and other advanced features. But CyberLink and Pinnacle both lack Premiere Elements' sophisticated "Smart-Fix" style tools.

Producing finished videos is also simple. Click the Produce tab, and you'll see clearly laid out options for all kinds of delivery formats. The File tab lets you choose among AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (portable), as well as H.264, WMV, and even RM (RealMedia) and MOV (QuickTime) output formats. Camcorder will write the production back to DV, HDV, or HDD. The last two tabs share videos to YouTube or Facebook, at up to 720p HD resolution in both cases.

A Few Quirks and Conclusions:
Although PowerDirector is fast, it's beginning to feel a little behind the times in other areas. The app seems geared toward capturing content and authoring discs, but it's not as useful for those importing clips from flash based devices like cell phones or Flip camcorders. There's no easy way to add movie-style titles and end credits. Adobe Premiere Elements 8 makes this much simpler and offers plenty of styles to choose from.

Few video editors are as capable as PowerDirector. Adobe Premiere Elements 8 offers an easy to use interface, and is probably a better buy if you're also doing a lot of photo editing, due to its bundle pricing with the excellent Adobe Photoshop Elements 8. Pinnacle Studio 14 is easier to use than PowerDirector, offering a dead-simple interface that gets you started assembling clips and previewing your movie in seconds. But it's also not nearly as capable, and it doesn't include any of PowerDirector's high-end hardware optimizations. Novice users and those who value ease over power would be better off with either Premiere Elements 8 or Pinnacle Studio 14. But for power users looking for a comprehensive video editor that can meet their need for speed, CyberLink PowerDirector 8 Ultra is the clear winner.

Microsoft Plus! was a commercial operating system enhancement product by Microsoft. The last edition is the Plus! SuperPack, which includes an assortment of screensavers, themes, and games, as well as multimedia applications. The Microsoft Plus! product was first announced on 31 January 1994 under the internal codename Frosting.

The enhancements that make up Microsoft Plus! are typically developed by Microsoft itself. This was the first version of Plus! and included Space Cadet Pinball, the Internet Jumpstart Kit (which was the introduction of Internet Explorer 1.0), DriveSpace 3 and Compression Agent disk compression utilities, the initial release of theme support along with a set of 12 themes, dial-up networking server, dial-up scripting tool, and the graphical improvements such as anti-aliased screen fonts, full-window drag, the ability to stretch or shrink the wallpaper to fit the screen and highcolor icons. Task Scheduler as it is present in later Windows versions was included as System Agent. Plus! for Windows 95 was initially marketed for adding features for high-performance computers so Windows 95 could meet the minimum system requirement of an 80386 CPU with 4 megabytes of RAM.[citation needed] Later releases of Windows 95 (OSR2 and onwards) included DriveSpace 3 and Internet Explorer 3.0. Windows 98 included all of the enhancements except the Pinball game, which was included starting with Windows NT 4.0.

The screen-saver and wallpaper files include images from the Codex Leicester, which Microsoft founder Bill Gates bought in 1994.

Microsoft Plus! for Kids!

This version was released in 1997 and targeted at children of ages 12 and under. It includes three new applications: Talk It!, a text-to-speech program that says what users type using various voices, Play It!, an electronic keyboard with music and sound effects, and Paint It!, a version of Paint oriented for kids. It also contained a picture picker along with clipart, fonts, 10 new desktop themes, and Protect It!, which are parental controls for Internet Explorer. Plus! for Kids! was the only Plus! release from the Microsoft Home and Entertainment division rather than the Windows Operating System development group.

There is also a demo version for Microsoft Plus! for Kids!. However it only contains the readme for the program and the Underwater theme.

As the sequel to the original suite of enhancements to Windows, Plus! 98 included the original set of themes along with eighteen new desktop themes (Some were based on popular comics such as FoxTrot and Garfield.[2]), along with new programs and tools for Windows 98. An organic art 3D screensaver rendered unique infinite 3D visual shapes[2]. A Start Menu cleanup utility was added to Windows 98's Maintenance Wizard[2]. A Cybermedia Non-Critical File Cleaner utility was integrated into Disk Cleanup. ZIP file integration with Windows Explorer was first introduced with this version under the name of Compressed folders. New games, such as Microsoft Golf 98 Lite, Lose Your Marbles! and the now popular Spider Solitaire were also part of Plus! 98[2]. A Deluxe CD Player with CDDB support[2] and a basic "express" version of Picture It were also included. Finally, Plus! 98 came with McAfee VirusScan 3.0, along with a six month supply of free updates

Some Plus! 98 features such as Compressed folders and the Spider Solitaire game were included in Windows Me and later Windows versions. The Deluxe CD Player was included with Windows 2000.

Microsoft Plus! Game Pack: Cards & Puzzles

This Plus! pack was released at the time of Windows Millennium Edition, however it could also be installed on other versions of Windows. It included the Microsoft Entertainment Pack: The Puzzle Collection - a collection of 10 arcade games and Microsoft Bicycle Card Collection, another set of 12 card games (Hearts, Spades, Cribbage, Pinochle, Crazy 8's, Oh Hell!, Go Fish, Old Maid, Euchre, Gin Rummy, Schafkopf and Skat). A trial version of Microsoft Pandora's Box was also included.
